11 Things To Stop Doing Now to Reach Greater Success

November 07, 2017

We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will”  — Chuck Palahniuk

One of the harder concepts to understand is that to become more successful, you need to stop doing some things, not add more things.

Even though each of us has a different definition of success, there is a list of things which, if you successfully stop doing, you will become more successful than you could have ever imagined.

Some of these things might be easier to give up, while some of them will be a bit harder. Just don’t give up. Become a little better today than you were yesterday.

1. Stop living a life of unhealthy choices

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” — Jim Rohn

Your body is the most important part, the key to your success. If you wish to take care of your health, the three most important things to make sure you get are:

  1. Quality Sleep
  2. Healthy Diet
  3. Physical Activity

These are small things, but trust me on this, it all adds up.

2. Stop thinking about the immediate future

“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” — Mae West

The most successful people I have ever met set goals for the long-term. Successful people know that to achieve these long-term goals, they simply have to add up the positive short-term habits of their daily lives.

If you not only do but embody these positive short-term habits, you will be able to accomplish things you never imagined.

Notice the difference between: “I eat well to get the body of my dreams” and “I eat well because that’s who I am”.

3. Stop playing in the little leagues

“Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. It is not just in some of us; it is for everyone, and as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” — Marianne Williamson

Go ahead, try and create things that you never thought possible. Allow yourself to become something much bigger than your reality. You fail 100% of the things you never try.

If you don’t achieve great things, the world will never benefit from those achievements. Isn’t that sad?

Please, be loud. Do not be scared to be more than you ever dreamed. Fail and try again.

4. Stop giving excuses

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the game” ― Randy Pausch

Incredibly successful people are aware that in order to achieve their greatest dreams, they need to take responsibility for every outcome in their lives. Successful people don’t care about where they started, how weak they currently are, or if they have failed in the past.

Knowing that everything that happens to you is up to you is both a scary and electrifying thought

When you live your life like every outcome in it is up to you and nobody else, that becomes the only way to success. Excuses stop existing because you know excuses stop you from achieving the things you want.

Become the master of your life.

5. Give Up The Fixed Mindset

“The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways.” ― Robert Greene, Mastery

People that lack success thinks that they cannot become smarter or more talented than others. They think some people are just born with it and some are not. Successful people know that talent means nothing without hard work. Hard work and dedication will always beat talent.

Successful people spend an incredible amount of time doing things that help them improve the way they think. They are constantly searching for new knowledge and skills so that they can make their lives much better.

Your past does not define your future. Work hard, and I promise you will shine.

6. Stop trying to use a “magic bullet”

“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better” — Émile Coué

Have you ever seen those movies where the main star one day wakes up with a billion dollars? Yeah… sorry to break it to you, but that’s not how life works (unless you win the lottery, of course).

Life is won not by looking for a single magic bullet to solve your problems, but by shooting several pellet bullets every day.

Successful individuals know that taking small, consistent steps toward their goals will compound over time and they will eventually achieve what they want.

Make long-term goals, but make short-term gains. Become a little better today than you were yesterday.

7. Stop trying to be perfect

“Strive for continuous improvement, instead of perfection.” — Kim Collins

No matter how much effort you put in, nothing will ever reach perfection. There will always be something to improve.

Being scared to fail, or being scared to succeed, often prevents you doing what you need to do in order to become successful. If you sit around waiting for things to be “just right”, a lot of time and opportunities will be lost.

8. Stop trying to do several things at once

“Most of the time multitasking is an illusion. You think you are multitasking, but in reality, you are actually wasting time switching from one task to another “ — Bosco Tjan

Multitasking might make you feel productive, but multitasking absolutely sucks. Successful people know that to achieve their goals, they have to focus on one thing and then beat it until it bends to their power. No matter what it is you do, focus.

Making sure you are fully committed to the present is a must-do

9. Stop saying yes to everything

“He who would accomplish little must sacrifice little; he who would achieve much must sacrifice much; he who would attain highly must sacrifice greatly.” — James Allen

In order to accomplish your wildest dreams, there are things to which you will have to say NO. This includes saying no to your family, friends, and colleagues.

When you start this, you will start feeling a bit empty inside. But when you achieve all of your goals, trust me, it will be completely worth it.

10. Stop keeping toxic people around you

“Stay away from negative people. They have a problem for every solution.” — Albert Einstein

You are the average of the people with which you hang out the most.

If you have toxic people around you, whether you like it or not, that is who you will become.

If the people around you are the kind that does not take charge of their lives, you will be dragged down, and with you, your opportunity to become successful.

If, however, you make an effort to be with people who are always trying to become better, your chances to succeed will dramatically increase.

Start looking at your surroundings. Chances are you need to make some changes.

11. Stop wasting time

“The trouble is, you think you have time” — Jack Kornfield

Your life is precious. You owe it to yourself to try and become the best version of yourself, to see how much you can achieve.

To become this “best version of yourself”, you need to get rid of those things around you that do nothing but waste your time. Do not let these time wasters pull you away from your inevitable success.

Learn to focus. Learn to control your attention. Learn to take advantage of each and every hour of a day.

We all die. You will die. Do not let fear conquer you. Create a legacy and continue to do things that will make your life better.
